This year’s National Safe Work Month is all about Safety in Business. And what better way to review safety in your business than a safety audit!

Safety audits can be arduous, time-consuming processes but equally as important. They are extremely necessary for not only ensuring your company is meeting national standards, but also for keeping your workers safe. With the right team, system and processes, safety audits can become much simpler for you and your company.

Here’s our top tips for conducting safety audits in your business.

Plan

Establish objectives and goals. Plan out a timeline of events, key participants and activities to follow. Setting out your intent at the beginning will make the whole process much easier and will allow you to avoid last-minute scrambling or missing important tasks.

Implement a good online system

Gone are the days where we are governed by excel spreadsheets and paper based processes. Implement an online software that allows you to manage everything in one centralised platform. Altora’s Induction Platform, Contractor Management System and Sign-In Software work harmoniously together to take the stress away, save you time, admin and resources. Allowing you to operate at your best throughout both audit time and your everyday operations.

Establish your audit team

Ensure you’ve got the right people doing the right tasks and delegate jobs throughout the team. Be transparent and provide a simple structure for them to follow along with due dates and accountability checkpoints.

Risk based approach

Establish and organise priorities on a higher-risk-first basis. What are the policies or tasks that pose the highest risk if they are absent or incomplete? What are the consequences? What needs to happen to ensure that you’ve covered off what you need to, and the auditor is going to be satisfied with your progress?

Document everything

Keep records of absolutely everything, you can never have too much information and data when it comes to audits. From timesheets to proof of training completion, having these things on file will not only save you heaps of time when being audited but will also help you receive the result you are after. If you can show the auditor that you are thoroughly prepared and prioritise safety, data and documentation, it will all go smoothly.

Evolve with your audits

Post audit, get together a clear plan for your company moving forward and in anticipation of the next audit. Communicate proposed changes and steps within your company processes and ensure that safety is an ongoing priority in your everyday business and objectives.

Altora’s Induction, CMS and Sign-In software are the ideal tools to help you keep on top of compliance and be fully organised when it comes to audit time. We receive a lot of positive feedback from clients about how much time and last-minute scrambling our platform has saved them. Whether it’s pulling up a report or identifying who was on site and when, all of the information is right at your fingertips on a centralised easy-to-use system.
